Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed that authorities have no reason to believe a second individual is involved.
Authorities announced Wednesday that a person of interest in the fatal shooting of right-wing political commentator Charlie Kirk is now in custody.
During a Wednesday press conference, officials confirmed that the individual believed to have carried out the attack had been apprehended. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox stated that authorities do not possess any information “that would lead us to believe there is a second person involved” in what he described as a “political assassination.”
Earlier, FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that the “subject” believed to have shot Kirk, 31, “is now in custody.”
Authorities said the shooter was believed to be wearing dark clothing and tactical gear and fired from a building roughly 200 feet from the site of the shooting.
Kirk, 31, was shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 10. He was manning his signature “Prove Me Wrong” table as part of his American Comeback Tour when the gunfire occurred.
Moments before the shooting, Kirk had shared photos and video from the event on his X account. He founded Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization established in 2012 to advocate for conservative politics on college and university campuses.
Charlie Kirk is survived by his wife, former Miss Arizona USA Erika Frantzve, and their two children, a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.
